The Five Minute Curl Routine

Yes, Really. Five Minutes.

If you've spent any time researching curly hair routines, you've probably seen the 8-step, 12-product, 45-minute processes that some sources recommend. Wash with a specific shampoo. Condition for exactly 7 minutes. Apply leave-in. Apply mousse. Apply gel. Diffuse on low heat for 20 minutes. Don't touch. Wait for the cast. Scrunch out the crunch. Apply oil to seal.

We're exhausted just writing that.

At Wuli, we believe great curls shouldn't require a science degree or half your morning. Our founder Amadou built this range for one reason: to make curl care uncomplicated. Lazy-proof, even.

Here's the 5-minute routine that our customers — from first-time curlies to veteran naturalistas — swear by.

The Core Four Routine

Four products. Five minutes. That's it.

Step 1: Cleanse (2 minutes)

Product: Moisturising Co-Wash (most wash days) or Deep Detox Shampoo (every 2-3 weeks for a deeper clean)

How: Apply to your scalp and massage with your fingertips for about a minute. The co-wash is a cleansing conditioner — it removes dirt and excess oil without stripping your hair's natural moisture. Think of it as a gentle reset rather than a harsh scrub.

Every 2-3 weeks, swap in the Deep Detox Shampoo for a proper clarifying wash. This removes product buildup, hard water deposits, and anything else that's accumulated. It's like hitting the refresh button.

Tip: Focus the cleanser on your scalp, not your ends. Your scalp produces oil. Your ends don't. Let the product rinse through your lengths as you wash it out — that's enough to clean them.

Step 2: Style (2 minutes)

Product: Curl Cream

How:

  1. Don't towel dry. Your hair should be soaking wet — not damp, not towel-dried, soaking. Squeeze out just enough water so you're not dripping everywhere.
  2. Take a pea-sized amount of Curl Cream (yes, really — a little goes a long way).
  3. Rub between your palms to warm it up.
  4. Use the "praying hands" technique: smooth your hands down sections of hair, palms pressed together with hair between them. This distributes the product evenly.
  5. Scrunch upward — cup the ends of your hair and push them up toward your scalp. This encourages your natural curl pattern to form.

That's it for styling. No mousse, no gel, no leave-in conditioner, no oil on top. The Curl Cream does the job of all of those — hydrates, defines, and holds, all in one formula.

The secret is the wet application. Water is the vehicle that carries the product into your hair shaft. When you apply to soaking wet hair, the cream distributes evenly and absorbs properly. As the water evaporates, it leaves the argan oil, jojoba esters, and botanical extracts locked inside the cuticle. The result: curls that hold their shape all day.

Step 3: Dry (1 minute of effort, then walk away)

Product: None — just patience (or a Wuli Hair Towel if you're in a rush)

How:

  • Air dry whenever possible. This gives the most consistent, frizz-free results.
  • If you're short on time, gently scrunch your hair with the Wuli Hair Towel (microfibre, which absorbs water without creating frizz like a regular towel does).
  • If you diffuse: use low heat, low speed. Cup your curls in the diffuser attachment and bring it up to your head. Don't push hair up with the diffuser — let it cradle.

The golden rule: don't touch your hair while it dries. Every time you touch, you break the curl clumps that are forming. Hands off until it's completely dry. This is the hardest part, but it makes the biggest difference.

Step 4: Refresh (30 seconds — day 2 and 3)

Product: Sea Salt Spray

How:

  1. Flip your head upside down
  2. Spray 3-4 times at your roots and mid-lengths
  3. Scrunch upward gently
  4. Flip back up

The Sea Salt Spray adds texture, volume, and reactivates the Curl Cream you applied on wash day. Your day-2 and day-3 curls look almost as good as day 1 — sometimes better, because the curl pattern has had time to set.

This step takes literally 30 seconds. Keep a bottle in your bathroom, one in your bag, or one at your desk.

What About the Brush?

The Wuli Curl & Scalp Brush is a bonus tool, not a required step. Use it during the cleansing step to gently detangle and stimulate your scalp. The flexible bristles work through knots without ripping or breaking hair.

When to use: In the shower, with conditioner or co-wash in your hair. Never brush curly hair when it's dry — that's how you get frizz (and heartbreak).

How Often Should You Wash?

There's no universal answer, but here's a framework:

  • Fine curly/wavy hair: Every 2-3 days (can get oily faster)
  • Medium curly hair: Every 3-4 days
  • Thick/coarse curly hair: Every 4-7 days (naturally drier, doesn't need frequent washing)

On non-wash days, just do Step 4 (Sea Salt Spray refresh). Your curls don't need to be rewashed to look great — they just need reactivation.

Find Your Wash Frequency

Select your hair type to get your personalised wash schedule:

Fine Curly / Wavy Hair Type 2A–2C, thin strands, gets oily quickly
🌀
Medium Curly Hair Type 3A–3B, medium density, balanced oil production
Thick / Coarse Curly Hair Type 3B–3C, thick strands, naturally drier

But Will It Work for MY Hair?

Fair question. Here's who this routine works for:

  • ✅ Wavy hair (type 2A-2C)
  • ✅ Curly hair (type 3A-3C)
  • ✅ Natural, unprocessed hair
  • ✅ People who want results without a 45-minute process

Here's who might need a different approach:

  • ❌ Chemically straightened or heavily bleached hair — the damage changes how products interact with your cuticle. Follow your stylist's advice first, and come back to Wuli once new growth comes in.
  • ❌ Very tight coils (type 4B-4C) — may benefit from heavier butters and the LOC/LCO method. Our Curl Cream can still be part of the routine, but you may need to layer it differently.

We're always honest about who our products are — and aren't — designed for. If you're unsure, our Truth Bomb series covers hair types, porosity, and how to figure out what your curls actually need.

What Our Customers Say

"I used to spend 30 minutes on my hair every morning. Now it's literally 5 minutes and my curls look better than they ever did with my old routine." — Sarah, Sydney

"My daughter and I both use the Core Four. She's 12 and does it herself. If a 12-year-old can manage this routine, anyone can." — Michelle, Melbourne

"I was sceptical about 'lazy-proof' until I tried it. Three products and my curls hold all day. I'm never going back to my old 8-step process." — Kate, Brisbane
