Low Porosity Hair? THIS Is Why Products Don't Work 😩

Summary

Low porosity hair rejects moisture, builds up product fast, and takes forever to dry. This video breaks down why most routines fail for low porosity hair β€” and the lightweight approach that actually works.

What's In The Video

If you've got low porosity hair and a bathroom full of products that don't seem to work, this video explains exactly why. Amadou identifies the four defining traits of low porosity hair and the common routine mistakes that make it worse.

You'll learn:

  • The 4 signs of low porosity hair: resists moisture, slow to wet, builds up product, slow to dry
  • Why combining conditioner + mask + leave-in + serum on low porosity hair causes protein overload
  • What protein overload looks like: dull, limp, flat curls
  • The golden rule: use lightweight, water-based products (check that water/aqua is the #1 ingredient)
  • How much product to actually use β€” far less than you think
  • Why heavy butters and oils like Vaseline are a no-go for low porosity curls

Got low porosity hair? Here are the top reasons why your products are not working for you. Before we dive in, if you haven't already, make sure to check out our previous video on porosity testing to make sure you know your porosity level. There are basically four main factors that define low porosity hair. One, it doesn't like moisture. Two, it takes ages to get wet. Three, it easily gets product buildup. And four, it takes ages to dry. Now, if your low porosity hair routine is currently consisting of a shampoo, conditioner, a mask, a leave-in, a serum or oil, as well as a gel or a mousse, child, you are doing it wrong. When you're combining conditioner, mask, leave-in, and a hair serum or oil into low porosity hair, you are basically giving your hair a protein overload. And what does that look like? Dull, limp, flat hair. That is not what you're trying to achieve. Too much of a leave-in is also a big no-no. Sometimes you might be tempted to take out this big goop of cream, when the reality is, if a co-cream is well formulated, all you really need is this little amount to start. Here's how you're gonna achieve epic curls for low porosity hair. Number one, use lightweight products. If it feels heavy in your hand, you can almost guarantee it's gonna feel very heavy in your hair. Number two, stick to water-based products. If you look at the ingredients list, make sure that water, or aqua in some cases, is the number one ingredient in the formulation. If it starts with a butter or some kind of other heavy oil like Vaseline, it is bound to weigh your hair down. It's gonna be too heavy for your hair
