Summary
Your curls need both protein and moisture β but too much of either causes problems. This truth bomb explains how to read your hair's signals and find the right balance between strength and softness.
What's In The Video
Amadou tackles one of the most misunderstood concepts in curl care: the protein-moisture balance. He explains why swinging between protein and moisture treatments creates a cycle of brittle or mushy hair β and how to break it.
You'll learn:
- What protein does (strengthens the hair shaft, reduces breakage) vs what moisture does (keeps hair pliable, prevents dryness)
- The signs of too much protein: stiff, snapping hair
- The signs of too much moisture: soft, noodley, shapeless curls
- How to read your hair's elasticity and texture to know what it needs right now
- Quick fixes: protein-boosting leave-in for limp hair, lightweight sea salt spray for brittle hair
- Why 'listen to your curls' beats any rigid rule system

Ah, protein versus moisture. Get the balance right and your curls will love you. But get it wrong? Let me help you make sure that doesn't happen. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another truth bomb. Many curlies swing wildly between protein and moisture treatments, thinking it's an either/or situation. But you see, this imbalance is actually leaving your hair either feeling brittle or mushy. Your curls are in need of a delicate balance. Balance. Yeah, that, between protein and moisture to stay healthy and strong. Protein strengthens the hair shaft and reduces breakage, while moisture keeps it pliable and prevents dryness. Too much protein can make your hair stiff and prone to snapping, while too much moisture can leave your curls feeling overly soft, noodley-like, and lacking of definition. The key is to listen, listen, listen, listen, to your curls and adjust your routine to its needs, not some rigid rule system. The trick is to observe your hair's elasticity and texture. If it's limp, add a protein-boosting leave-in conditioner. If it's feeling brittle, boost it with something light like a sea salt spray. At the end of the day, folks, find your balance. Need more insight on protein and moisture balance? You know I've got you covered. There's an entire chapter in my book all about this. And how do you balance protein and moisture? Share it below. I'd love to hear it.
